From Stagnation to Transformation: The Urgent Need for Innovations to Improve Outcomes in Diabetic Foot Ulcers

In response to low healing rates and high infection incidence in diabetic foot ulcers, a Global DFU Advisory Board comprised of 8 renowned DFU experts was established by Convatec in 2024. Amongst the panel’s aims were to encourage earlier intervention, improved utilisation of simplified guidance, and adoption of clinically proven emerging innovations. A Delphi consensus approach was followed to synthesise key statements, and our speakers will discuss some of these in an interactive session. They will discuss the need for better adherence to simplified global guidelines and classification frameworks, the drivers of early adoption of proven medical device innovations, and improved infection management. Our speakers will discuss the need for innovations that manage multiple barriers to wound healing at the same time, and to select dressings based on multidimensional wound and patient assessment. We will introduce a multimodal, nitric oxide-generating dressing and the clinical evidence in DFUs that supports it. Speakers will highlight the need to introduce such innovations responsibly within standard of care to improve the trajectory of DFU outcomes.

Despite advances in diabetic foot management, significant gaps remain between clinical evidence, guideline recommendations, and daily practice. Insights from the recent EWMA Survey highlight ongoing challenges in delivering optimal care and achieving predictable healing outcomes for patients with Diabetic Foot Syndrome (DFS).
This symposium will explore how these unmet needs can be addressed through the effective use of single-use Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (sNPWT). Participants will gain insights into the key survey findings, understand the mode of action of sNPWT, and learn why its mechanisms are particularly relevant in supporting healing in diabetic foot patients.
Through a review of clinical evidence, healing outcomes, and real-world case studies, experts will demonstrate how sNPWT can help optimize post-surgical and diabetic foot wound management, improve healing trajectories, and support more efficient clinical pathways.
